Research on Diabetes

With adequate research on diabetes, patients could be given hope of survival. It brings hope to those who have diabetes and their families. It is only when there is no research on a particular disease that the patients can feel dejected and hopeless. A diabetic patient can only be hopeful of the new findings of research.

Pancreas Transplants

This is one of the findings of research. It has been discovered that pancreas from another person or an artificial one can be transplanted into the body of a diabetic patient and this will resolve the issue. Once the transplant is done, the next thing to do would be to inject the patient with drugs that will suppress the rejection system of the body. This must be taken by the patient to prevent rejection of the transplant by the body, which recognizes that what has been transplanted as a foreign body. Whole or partial pancreatic transplants are presently being performed in many places around the world. It is true this procedure has improved the diabetes status of recipients, there are still problems of rejection and infection.

As stated by a world renowned transplant surgeon, the best transplants is when the pancreas and kidney is transplanted at the same time. It tends to last longer. Out of over 700 transplants performed since 1978, there has been an 85 percent success rate for the simultaneous transplants as against 75 percent success rate for the transplant of the pancreas alone. It should be noted that there is no need for increase in immunosuppressant medicine when two organs are involved in the transplanted instead of just a single transplant.

The future of transplants will likely make use of hybrids or coated islets. This technology introduces the coating of islet cells with a semi-permeable membrane which protects the transplant from the immune system. Usually Islet cells are purified, and covered in a substance that has a compatibility with tissues of the body. It has small holes which allows nutrients to enter and also allows waste and insulin to live the cell body.. These holes are too tiny to allow the immune cells or antibodies to enter, thereby protecting the islets from rejection.

Another method that was devised for coating a cell. The idea was to insert the cells inside the membrane material which is called the sphere. The spheres can then be transplanted in the abdomen, or injected through a partial vein which is in the liver. This so far has proved to be a better method than others which was used previously before.
